So, here's The Plan

We have a whole bunch of interests (some competing, some not) and problems that need to be solved.  For example:

  • The farm has an orchard.  Each year fruit appears (apples, pears,...), and each year bears come into the orchard to eat the fruit.  In the process, the bears damage the trees.  In some cases, entire trees are knocked over or broken off at the base.  Now, the straight forward solution would be to put up a bear-proof fence.  And, while we're at it, make it deer-proof and elk-proof. Perhaps barbed wire, perhaps electrified.  Images of Stalag 13 come to mind.

  • Blackberry vines are everywhere.  We want to keep some, but they really are invasive.  Mowing is usually not good enough.  They come back with a vengeance.

  • Grass needs mowing

  • Everything needs to be fertilized – to some extant.

  • On the positive side (note the green dot -- cool huh?) we like ducks -- specifically Runner Ducks

    • Ducks eat bugs

    • They certainly fertilize!

    • They need protection -- oops, red dot!

  • We like dogs. It turns out that there is a whole family of dog breeds known as "Livestock Guard Dogs" (LGDs for the Terminally Acronymish (TA for short))

    • Akbash

    • Anatolian

    • Pyrenees

    • Our favorite -- Maremma

Thank you for stopping by our store. This is where you can sign up one of our fresh ducks as part of our Duck of the Month Club. The $20 price reserves your fresh Grimaud Pekin duck. See details below.

Each month that you elect to purchase one of our ducks you will receive an email reminding you to come to the Waldport Community Center to pick up your duck, duck recipe and customized ingredients.

Our ducks are generally available the last Thursday of each month. Please note the dates for November and December.

Here are the details:

  • Each month that you elect to participate, you will be entitled to:
    • One fresh (not frozen) duck with:
      • The month's featured (and tested) recipe.
      • Most of the ingredients -- we can not include liquor (such as used in our Grand Mariner recipe), and we will not include common items such as salt, flour, olive oil or other liquids.
    • Membership in the Duck-of-the Month Club blog where you can read our experience and share yours if you wish.
  • You pick up your fresh duck on the last Thursday of each month at the Waldport Community Center parking lot between 3PM and 7PM (additional hours on special arrangement). Note special days for November and December
  • If you can not make it to Waldport, then:
    • We will freeze your duck and hold it for one week.
    • You may drop by the farm (by appointment) to pick up your duck.
    • After one week we will donate your duck to charity in your name.
    • You are still responsible for the full price of the duck.
  • At the time you sign up you pay a $20 deposit for each duck.
  • Each month:
    • You pick up your duck, the duck recipe and ingredients.
    • Pay the remainder of the price calculated at $8/pound (total price for a typical five pound duck will be $40), plus the cost of the other ingredients.  The price per pound of duck is guaranteed. The cost of the other ingredients is expected to range from $0.50 to $5.00 depending upon the recipe.
  • If something changes:
    • You may cancel a duck up to one week prior to pickup at no charge.
  • The first ducks will be available August 30, 2012
